Cock & Bull village activities
In the peaceful village of Huangli nestled in the hills and rice terraces south east of Kali, the flat stony riverbed was used for a series of 'bull' fights where 'contestants’ from neighbouring villages pitted their strength (and testosterone!) against each other. Most ended very quickly with one or both bulls running away chased by their owner, however some were prolonged and ferocious affairs with neither bull willing to give up even though dozens of ‘marshals’ were pulling on ropes attached to hind legs. There was no long-term damage seen to any of the bulls although I’m sure there were some headaches if they could tell you! (and the odd subarachnoid or extradural bleed too) I doubt that they were too happy working on the rice paddy the next day either! It was probably more dangerous for the spectators than the bulls!
The Cock fighting was without barbs, no blood, just lots more testosterone and a lot of jumping about – quite a spectacle as they are brightly coloured!
